As a leading sustainable business expert, Marci is doing her part to help bring textile manufacturing back to the USA in a sustainable way. Her company MetaWear’s 40,000 square foot facility, near Washington DC, was America’s first turnkey sustainable factory and is the nation’s leading sustainable fashion manufacturer. MetaWear offers turnkey solutions for stylish “made in the USA,” GOTS certified, Cradle to Cradle certified, screen-printed, and dyed cotton T-shirts, contract knit apparel, and other custom goods.
Some of her past achievements include launching first time organic and sustainable fashion initiatives at top retailers — such as Whole Foods Market, Macy’s, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and AVEDA. Having dedicated her life and work to sustainable fashion, Marci is intimately knowledgeable about the cotton industry at large, both to its challenges and opportunities to be sustainable in all areas of production, use, to recycling. Both professionally and personally, Marci is an advocate for the use of cotton over synthetic materials, when considering the health of people, planet, and in particular our oceans. Marci is the recipient of many awards and honors, including Retail Touchpoint’s “Retail Innovator Award”, the Natural Product Industry’s “Socially Responsible Business Award”, New York Moves “Power Woman Award”, Fashion Group International's "Rising Star Award”, ABC News’ “Legends and Legacies”, ELLE Magazine’s “Mercury Style Award”, and the prestigious Henry Crown Fellowship of the Aspen Institute and Royal Society of the Arts (RSA) Fellowship.
She has been featured in countless newspapers, magazine articles, and TV outlets, such as Entrepreneur, Newsweek, The New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, InStyle, Lucky, Vanity Fair, ELLE, CNN, Entertainment Television and the Discovery Channel. Additionally, her work was recognized in the 2011 book “ECOAMAZONS: 20 Women Who Are Transforming the World”. In 2014, Marci was the creative force and Executive Producer of the 2014 documentary "THREAD|Driving Fashion Forward” with supermodel Amber Valletta. In August 2018, Ms. Zaroff launched her book “ECOrenaissance: Cocreating a Stylish, Sexy, and Sustainable World” (Simon & Schuster).
Her passion is to add value to apparel and home textiles through building vertical and transparent supply chains and connecting the dots from source to story.
For nearly three decades, Marci has been instrumental within the fashion and textile industry for driving authenticity, environmental leadership, and social justice worldwide. She is an internationally recognized visionary and renowned serial ECOpreneur: coining and trademarking the term 'ECOfashion' in the 1990s, Founding the ECOfashion lifestyle brands MetaWear, Under the Canopy, Farm to Home, as well as Co-Founding BeyondBrands, Good Catch, and The Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
Marci has tirelessly championed sustainable fashion and is currently a Board Officer for the Organic Trade Association, Textile Exchange, and Fashion Revolution USA, as well as an Advisor to Fair Trade USA, Turning Green, and the Cradle to Cradle Innovation Institute’s 'Fashion Positive'. Additionally, Marci helped develop the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the first USA Fair Trade Textile Certification.
